May the Force Be with You
This Star Wars shower mosaic was dreamed up for a Los Angeles-based client by architect and designer Emily Jagoda. This geeky, pixelated tile may not be for everyone, but we’re betting the kids who use this shower everyday love it.
When it comes time to sell, many buyers might take one look at this wacky bathroom and say “No way!” but we suspect there’s another fan out there who might very well fall in love with this house because of the bathroom. What do you think?
But wait, two Star Wars themed bathrooms? That’s right, we found another one. One more and we can officially call this a trend.
In the Pink
Have you heard about legendary silver screen star Jayne Mansfield’s equally legendary pink bathroom? Boasting a heart-shaped tub, this pepto pink explosion was carpeted in pink shag from floor to ceiling.
Extreme as that may sound, pink bathrooms are more common than you probably realize. Colorfully tiled bathrooms were all the rage in midcentury homes. An estimated 5 million pink bathrooms were installed across the US from 1946-1966, according a SavethePinkBathrooms.com, a website dedicated to preserving vintage pink bathrooms.
A growing number of homebuyers are interested in authentic midcentury properties. If your listing features a bathroom with original turquoise, lavender or even chartreuse tile, you may be in luck; it could be worth more (to the right buyers) than you thought and should be marketed appropriately. If, however, it looks anything like Mansfield’s… well, it might be time to call a contractor.
Solid Gold Design
In Hong Kong, there’s a bathroom that takes the idea of the throne a little too literally. This bathroom, a tourist attraction designed by Hang Fung jewelers in 2001, features a 900lb solid gold toilet encrusted with precious gems. And that’s just to start! The wash basin, mirror frames, chandeliers and even toilet brush are also made of 24k gold.
If this commercial property ever hit the market, you can bet this bathroom would be a selling point, given the rising price of gold. Even if you don’t demand a jeweled lavatory, you could always melt it down – exactly what Hang Fung already did to one ton of its display gold in 1998. They sold it for about $855 an ounce, almost double their initial purchase price. Now that’s one bathroom upgrade that really paid for itself!
Back to the Future
Modern tub + prehistoric cave drawings + animal print everything + marble bust = one of the weirder home bathrooms we’ve seen! We’re not even going to try to justify the resale value of this remodel. These owners had better plan on living in this house, oh… maybe forever?
